A road rage incident in Glasgow could be linked to a targeted attack that left three men seriously injured, police say.

Residents of Cardowan, Stepps, said the area around Frankfield Road resembled a "warzone" following the violence on the afternoon of Sunday June 4.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman confirmed they had been "called out to a van on fire", while an eyewitness said two vans had been engulfed in flames "as high as a house".

Three men were taken to hospital following the incident, which police said at the time could be linked to gang activity.

On Saturday, a police spokesman said detectives were investigating a road rage incident in Riddrie on the same day that they believe could be connected.

Detective inspector David Reilly, of Clydebank CID, said: "Around 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon, a 46-year-old man was driving his silver Transit van on Cumbernauld Road, Riddrie, when two cars, a blue BMW X6 4x4 and a white saloon car, each with three male occupants, tried to block him in.

"He managed to turn his vehicle around speed off north along Cumbernauld Road over the motorway and towards Gartloch Road in Ruchazie where he lost the two other cars who had been pursuing him.

"He left the van in the area of Gilbertfield Place, Ruchazie, where it was subsequently stolen and then used in the incident in Frankfield Road, Cardowan, where around 1.30pm on Sunday afternoon it was deliberately driven into another Ford Transit van which he was in with two other men."

Mr Reilly said it was likely that other drivers would have seen the incident happen and urged any witnesses to come forward.

He added: "The BMW and its owner have since been traced and enquiries are continuing in that regard, however, we still need information about the white saloon car.

"We also mentioned in our previous appeal that the attackers had got into two cars, a white saloon car and a black 4x4 when fleeing the scene in Frankfield Road. The black 4x4, which we now know was a Lexus, was found burnt out in a wooded area in Millerston around 10pm on Sunday.

"This area is not visible from the road but is popular with dog walkers. One man has already come forward to police as he saw a white car make off from the site, but we need to speak to people who use that path or live in the area and saw the black Lexus being set on fire to find out when it all happened and any details that will assist our enquiry."

Mr Reilly said the response from the public has so far been "reasonable", with door-to-door inquiries ongoing in the area.

He also appealed for anyone with video footage of the Frankfield Road incident or the burning car in Millerston to come forward.
