A probe has been launched into Police Scotland's response to an altercation that left one man dead.

William Brittle, 60, was injured after an alleged incident at a property in Paisley, Renfrewshire, on Monday, June 6.

Police were called to Broomlands Street in the town at around 2.35pm and Mr Brittle was taken by ambulance to Royal Alexandra Hospital, where he died the following day.

Two men, aged 45 and 26, and a 41-year-old woman were arrested in connection with the death.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner has now begun an investigation into the police's handling of the incident.

A spokesman for watchdog said: "The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner has been instructed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to carry out an investigation in relation to the initial police response to an incident on June 6 in Paisley.

"William Brittle, 60, who was involved in the incident, was later taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, where he died on June 7.

"A report into the findings of the investigation will be submitted to the COPFS in due course."
