Two pilots accused of being drunk at the controls of a transatlantic passenger plane have appeared in court.

Imran Zafar Syed, 37, of Toronto, Canada, and Jean-Francois Perreault, 39, of Ontario, were arrested on a Canada-bound flight as it was due to depart Glasgow International Airport on Monday.

The Air Transat service was due to fly to Toronto before both pilots were detained and accused of being impaired through alcohol.

On Tuesday, the pilots appeared from custody at Paisley Sheriff Court, charged with being drunk at the controls of an aircraft under the Railway and Transport Safety Act 2003.

They were also accused of threatening or abusive behaviour during the incident.

They did not enter a plea or declaration and both men were remanded in custody, with their cases continued for further examination.

They are expected to appear in court again within the next eight days.

Earlier on Tuesday a rescheduled Air Transat flight for affected passengers left Glasgow for Toronto.
