A man has pleaded guilty to the culpable homicide of his five-month-old son.

David Sinclair, 34, appeared at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, where he admitted causing the death of baby Joshua at their home in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, in December 2012.

Sinclair compressed the chest of the boy to "asphyxiate" him, seized hold of him and shook him repeatedly.

He inflicted "blunt force trauma" to Joshua by "means to the prosecutor unknown".

The child was left so severely injured that he later died at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.

Sinclair had entered a not guilty plea for a murder charge but accepted the lesser charge of culpable homicide.

Detective chief inspector Laura McLuckie, the senior investigating officer, said: "David Sinclair admitted to being responsible for the death of his baby son, Joshua, who died needlessly at a young and vulnerable age.

"My sincere condolences go out to Joshua's extended family, who have endured this harrowing incident and continue to live with the pain of Joshua's untimely death.

"A defenceless baby died at the hands of his father, the one person whose role was to protect and care for him.

"Child abuse in any form is a deplorable crime. Police Scotland will thoroughly investigate any report we receive, regardless of when the crime occurred, to ensure those responsible are held to account for their actions."
