Two people have been taken to hospital after becoming trapped in an overturned car on the M74 in South Lanarkshire.

Emergency services were called to the crash, near junction 12 by Uddington, at around 3.30pm.

A white Fiat Punto had flipped onto its roof on the southbound carriageway, trapping a man and a woman in the vehicle.

No other vehicles were directly involved in the crash, but two other cars were damaged by flying debris.

An air ambulance arrived at the scene to supply treatment before the injured pair were taken to Wishaw General Hospital by road.

The extent of their injuries is as yet unknown.

Both directions on the M74 were initially closed, but northbound lanes have now been reopened.

Drivers are warned that southbound lanes between junction 11 and 12 will remain closed until further notice.

A police spokesperson said: "Police received a report of a one vehicle road crash at about 3.30pm on Saturday.

"A Fiat Punto car overturned on the M74 southbound between junction 11 and junction 12.

"No other people or cars were directly involved in the crash. However, two other cars were damaged as a result of flying debris.

"Two occupants, a man and a woman, were taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital but as yet we have no details of injuries sustained."
