A gunman was chased away by a member of staff during a robbery bid at a BP garage in Glasgow.

The armed raider entered a petrol station in the north of the city just before midday on Saturday and threatened the 53-year-old shop assistant with what appeared to be a firearm.

The suspect demanded cash after entering the garage on Broomfield Road at around 11.55am but was chased away by the member of staff and got away with only some cans of juice.

Police said the gun was not fired and the assistant was uninjured. The suspect was last seen in Ryehill Road and is described as white, early to mid-20s, average height and of slim build.

He was wearing a dark woollen hat, dark sunglasses, a grey top underneath a dark body warmer, blue denims and white trainers.

Detectives are also probing another robbery in the north of the city the day before, which they believe may be linked.

A BetFred bookmakers on Hawthorn Street was targeted at around 3.20pm on Friday when a man entered the shop and demanded money from the 23-year-old shop assistant.

He then ran off with a three-figure sum of cash, leaving the shop assistant uninjured but very distressed.

The suspect was last seen on Chestnut Street and is described as white, early to mid-20s, average height and of slim build.

He was wearing black plimsoll shoes, black trousers, a grey hooded zipper, dark sunglasses and a black baseball cap.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "Detectives at the Greater Glasgow Community Investigation Unit are appealing for any witnesses to the robberies.

"They also would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the suspect/ suspects hanging around the premises prior to the robberies taking place or running off afterwards.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at the CIU at Helen Street via 101. Alternatively calls can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained."
