Drivers have been warned to expect significant delays over several months as new gantries for signs are installed on the M8, M74 and M73.

The work will begin next Monday, with parts of the motorways shut to two lanes and various slip roads closed.

Work on the M74 section of the £500m Motorway Improvements Project will last around three months, taking place between junction 2A, Fullarton and junction 6, Hamilton.

The M8 work will start in mid-August between junctions 10, Easterhouse and junction 8, Baillieston, lasting around four months.

The M73 work will begin in mid-September and will last around six weeks, taking place between junction 1, Maryville and junction 2, Ballieston.

On each motorway, both the northbound and southbound carriageways will be affected.

When complete, the scheme hopes to reduce congestion in central Scotland and shave 20 minutes off the commute between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Graeme Reid, project manager for the Motorway Improvements Project, said: "Transport Scotland is working with the contractor to ensure these works are completed as quickly as possible.

"Whilst we're doing everything we can to minimise the disruption, delays will be inevitable, so we're asking motorists to check the Transport Scotland and Traffic Scotland websites for updates on these key routes, to plan their journeys in advance and to look at taking an alternative route if possible."
