The body of a man has been found in a lane in North Lanarkshire.

Police were called to Newmains near Wishaw on Monday afternoon when they found a man lying dead in an alley at around 1.05pm.

The discovery was made near Braedale Crescent and an investigation has now been launched.

Detectives are treating the death as unexplained and a post-mortem is yet to take place.

The man has still to be identified.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Around 1.05pm on Monday, police were called to a lane close to Braedale Crescent in Wishaw where the body of a man was discovered.

"Formal identification is due to take place and a post mortem will be carried out in due course to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.

"A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."
