A sex attacker is being hunted by police after a woman was assaulted as she walked her dog.

The 60-year-old woman was subjected to a sexual assault while walking through a wooded area in Wilsontown, a small village in South Lanarkshire about a mile north of Forth, on Sunday afternoon.

She was approached by a man at a popular dog walking spot near Schoolhouse Road at around 3.40pm.

He fled the scene after the sex attack and the woman was left badly shaken.

The suspect is described as white, in his mid to late 20s with a pale complexion and fair hair.

He was wearing grey joggies and a blue hoodie.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with any information to come forward.

STV News understands police are following a positive line of inquiry.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "An investigation is under way after a 60-year-old woman was subjected to a sexual assault near Schoolhouse Road in Wilsontown, South Lanarkshire, on Sunday.

"Inquiries are continuing into the incident."
