Two people have been taken to hospital after a light aircraft crashed into the side of a mountain near Oban.

Emergency services were called out to search for the aircraft after an emergency beacon was activated around 11am.

Two coastguard helicopters and a mountain rescue team were called out to help with the search and rescue effort.

The aircraft was found at Beinn Lora near the village of Benderloch, which is near Oban airport.

A man who was in the aircraft had suffered serious leg injuries and a woman who was also on board suffered chest injuries.

The woman was airlifted  Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and the man was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

It is understood the aircraft involved is a Breezer B600 which is registered in Germany. It had just taken off from Mull and was due to stop at Oban airport to refuel before heading to Barra.

Police said it appeared to have got into difficulty before the crash.

A spokesman for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said: "We have deployed a small team to a microlight aircraft accident near Oban, Scotland."
