A man reported trying to lure young children to his car had "good intentions", say police.

Officers launched an inquiry into the claims after a number of posts began circulating on social media about a man who allegedly approached children in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire.

The children involved ran away and police were contacted.

Officers then spoke to the man in question after he voluntarily went the the local police station.

Police say it has emerged the man was acting with good intentions and no further action was taken.

They have now issued a statement to reassure the public over what happened and urge them to continue to report any suspicious behaviour.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "Police in West Dunbartonshire were made aware of a reports circulating on social media that a man had tried to lure children into a car in Clydebank.

"Since this report, a man has attended Clydebank Police Office and helped police with this serious enquiry. It has transpired that the man was acting with good intentions and was not a threat to the children at any time.

"In light of this we would like to reassure the public that Police Scotland take these allegations seriously, and we would like to commend the children in reporting this incident to their parents, and remembering their "RUN- YELL -TELL" message.

"Finally the police would encourage all members of the public to continue to report any behaviour they deem suspicious on 999 or 101."
