A man has been arrested after his dog was repeatedly punched in the face.

Police were called to a high rise block of flats in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, in the early hours of Saturday over reports a dog was attacked.

A 30-year-old man has now been arrested and reported to prosecutors in connection with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal at Kirkton Avenue at around 3.30am.

The dog has been removed from the man's custody and passed on to the Scottish Society for the Protection and Care of Animals.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We were called around 3.30am on July 30 to a report of an assault on a dog at flats in Kirkton Avenue, Clydebank.

"A 30-year-old man was arrested and reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. He was also reported to the procurator fiscal for an alleged breach of the peace."
