A bomb disposal unit has been called out to deal with a Second World War mine that got caught in a boat's fishing net.

The incident happened at around 4pm on Thursday off the island of Cumbrae on the west coast.

A 1000m exclusion zone has been set up around the mine and other vessels are being advised to stay clear of the area at Stinking Bay, to the north of the island.

A police spokeswoman said an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit has been sent to the scene and was expected to detonate the mine.

She said: "A boat snagged what appeared to be a World War Two ordnance mine at around 4pm today.

"As a precaution, the coastguard has set up a 1000m exclusion zone in the area.

"It's anticipated the mine will be exploded at some point tonight.

"No homes or businesses have been evacuated."
