An ambulance caught fire near Helensburgh after it developed a mechanical fault.

The vehicle was returning to its base at the Vale of Leven Hospital in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire at around 5.30pm on Saturday when it caught fire on the A817 Haul Road at Garelochhead.

A member of the public posted a photo of the burned out ambulance on Twitter following the incident.

It showed the vehicle with fire-damaged windows being loaded onto a recovery truck.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident.

No patients were involved and there were no injuries.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "An ambulance returning to base at Vale of Leven developed a mechanical fault which resulted in a fire.

"No patients were involved and the crew were unharmed. The vehicle was replaced by a spare."
