A 6ft tall South American bird which has been on the loose in Ayrshire for two weeks has been caught on video.

The bird - reported to be a rhea, a close relative of the ostrich - has been spotted in various locations around the village of Patna by locals.

In what is believed to be the first video footage of the elusive bird, John Mckinstry recorded a clip of the animal as he was out for a walk by the River Doon on Sunday morning.

The Scottish SPCA have warned people not to approach the bird, as it can become aggressive.

Mr Mckinstry, 31, told STV News: "I was just down on the river and there it was, on the other side of the water from us.

"I had to look twice, I said 'is that what I think it is?'

"Once it saw us it freaked out and ran off."

He added: "It ran so fast, good luck to the person that tries to catch it!"

Rheas can reach speeds of up to 40mph and are native to South America.

The bird in Patna was originally thought to be an ostrich, but has been reported to be a rhea which escaped from its owners in July.
