A street in Glasgow city centre has been closed after an underground sewer collapsed, causing subsidence in both lanes.

North Hanover Street was shut on Monday afternoon and is expected to remain closed overnight.

Scottish Water are working to assess the issue, which is thought to have been caused by the collapse of a sewer four metres underground.

The affected area is between George Square and Cathedral Street.

Diversions have been put in place and drivers have been warned to expect delays at peak times.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "Scottish Water operation teams are on site to deal with a collapsed sewer on North Hanover Street in Glasgow near Queen Street rail station.

"It has been necessary to close the road while the assessment of the damage is being carried out and we apologise for any disruption this may cause.

"We will now be working to find a solution to repair any damage and return the road as soon as possible."
