A teenager is due in court in connection with the rape of a young girl in bushes outside an Asda store.

Police launched a major investigation on Sunday into a report of a serious sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

The alleged attack took place on Sunday at around 8.15pm outside the supermarket on Main Street.

The girl was returning to her bike after leaving the shop when the alleged assault happened.

Police said a 19-year-old man was arrested and is presently detained in connection with the incident. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

He is expected to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Wednesday in connection with the incident.
