A man has died following a collision between a car and a lorry on the A77.

The two-vehicle crash happened between Ballantrae in South Ayrshire and Cairnryan in Dumfries and Galloway shortly before 2pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services were called and the 55-year-old man who was driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene. His relatives have been informed, police said.

Sergeant Iain Pittams said: "Enquiries are continuing to establish the exact circumstances of this incident.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at the Divisional Road Policing Unit based at Irvine via 101."

The road was closed in both directions between the A714 at Girvan and the A751 at Innermessan following the crash.
