A major blaze ripped through a takeaway restaurant leaving the building with "significant damage".

Firefighters in breathing apparatus went into the two-storey building in Alexander Street, Airdrie, on Wednesday to tackle the flames using high pressure jets.

The blaze broke out at around 3.50pm in the Lanarkshire town and fire crews found a well-developed fire had already taken hold when they arrived.

Extra crews from across Lanarkshire had to be sent as the fire worsened but it was brought under control by around 4:45pm.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said: "The building sustained significant damage and SFRS crews remained at the scene to conducted cutting away operations, with a thermal imaging camera in use as they searched for any hidden fire spread within the structure.

"No-one was hurt as a result of the incident and the last of the SFRS crews left the scene around 9:30pm."
