An additional E Coli case has been confirmed in an outbreak believed to be linked to blue cheese.

A total of 16 people were initially diagnosed with the strain and the number rose to 18 earlier this month.

Health Protection Scotland (HPS) confirmed on Friday that another case has been diagnosed.

The organisation said although the latest case was newly linked to the outbreak, the sufferer developed symptoms at the same time as others between July 2 and July 16.

HPS is working with Food Standards Scotland, NHS boards and environmental health teams to investigate the outbreak of the E Coli O157 strain.

The health agency said Dunsyre blue cheese, produced by Errington Cheese in Lanarkshire, was still the most likely cause.

The firm has carried out a voluntary recall of two batches, C22 and D14, which people are advised not to eat.

Anyone who is experiencing symptoms associated with E Coli, including stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting, should contact their GP or call NHS 24 on 111 for advice.

HPS said all patients have received appropriate treatment and are recovering at home.
