A gas leak has forced the evacuation of guests from a hotel near Glasgow Airport.

The M8 was partially shut near the source of the leak, which is in St Andrew's Drive, in Paisley, close to the Holiday Inn Express carpark.

Around 220 guests were evacuated from 127 rooms at the hotel, while police said no one took ill in the incident on Friday morning.

The airport remains open and passengers travelling to it have been warned to expect delays.

Restrictions were in place on the M8 at junctions 27 and 29 for a period before it was reopened.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "At 2.45am on Friday, September 9, police and emergency services responded to reports of a gas leak, on a roadway outside, close to the carpark at the Holiday Inn Express at Glasgow Airport. SGN network engineers are currently undertaking repairs.

"There are no reports of anyone having taken unwell as a result of the leak. Emergency services remain at the scene.

"The airport remains fully operational."

Gas engineers traced the leak to a subterranean mains pipe, while guests have been moved to the Holiday Inn closer to the airport.

Workers wearing breathing apparatus tackled the gas leak after the source was traced.
