A man is fighting for his life in hospital after plunging into a river.

Police and emergency services were called to the River Leven in West Dunbartonshire at around 3.10pm on Friday.

The man fell into the water near Bonhill Bridge, close to Susannah Street, in Alexandria.

A rescue operation was launched and he was pulled from the river by emergency crews.

The 35-year-old man has been taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: " Around 3.10pm on Friday, police and emergency services responded to reports of a man having fallen into water at the River Leven close to Susannah Street in Alexandria.

"The 35-year-old man was rescued by emergency services and taken by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, where he remains in a critical condition."
