A 21-year-old man has died after crashing his car into a lamppost and overturning on the M74 near Bothwell.

The collision took place just after 11pm on Saturday on the southbound stretch of the motorway between the Bothwell Services and the Raith Interchange.

The driver, who was driving a blue-coloured Ford Fiesta, reportedly lost control, leading the car to cross the central reservation, collide with a lamppost and overturn before coming to rest on the opposite carriageway.

The man was taken to Monklands District General Hospital but died shortly after admission.

A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Sergeant Craig McDonald at the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Motherwell said: "We are currently trying to establish the circumstances of this tragic incident and I'd like to speak to anyone who has not already spoken to police who witnessed the crash.

"Anyone with information can contact the Road Policing Unit at Motherwell via telephone number 101."
