Motorists are facing increased delays as the next phase of works begins on a project to upgrade the M8, M74 and M73.

Significant disruption is expected on the routes in the outskirts of Glasgow over the next three months.

New gantries are being installed on the M8 and M74 as part of Transport Scotland's £500m motorway improvements project, while other roadworks continue.

The works are focusing on the M74 between junction 2A, Fullerton and junction 6, Hamilton, and on the M8 between junction 8 Easterhouse and 10 Baillieston.

Carriageways in both directions are reduced to two lanes, and various slip roads will be closed.

The scheme aims to to reduce congestion in central Scotland.

Once complete, it will shave 20 minutes off the commute between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Transport Scotland has said it will work with the contractor to try to ensure the works are completed as quickly as possible.
