A five-year-old boy has been knocked down and killed in the east end of Glasgow.

The boy is believed to have been walking home from school when he was struck by a white Ford Transit van around 3.15pm on Monday in Dalness Street.

He was taken by ambulance to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but died a short time later.

Police said the 62-year-old driver of the van was not injured during the incident.

Crash investigators remained at the scene on Monday evening and Dalness Street was closed at Dalness Close.

Sergeant Jackie Dunbar, Greater Glasgow road policing unit, Govan, said: "From our enquiries so far, it would appear that the boy, a pupil at St Paul's Primary School on Anwoth Street, Glasgow, was struck by the van, which had come in to Dalness Street from Tollcross Road, as it turned into a car park on Dalness Street.

"It was picking-up time at the school and there were a number of people in the area at the time of the incident.

"I would ask that anyone who saw what happened, and who has not already been spoken to by police, contact officers at the Road Policing Complex via 101."

Diversions have been put in place as the investigation continues.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
