Tributes have been paid to a five-year-old boy after he was knocked down and killed on his way home from school in the east end of Glasgow.

Lennon Toland was struck by a white Ford Transit van around 3.15pm on Monday in Dalness Street.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but died a short time later.

Police said the 62-year-old driver of the van was not injured during the incident.

Family members have set up an online fundraising page to raise funds to help the youngster's parents with funeral costs.

Friends and locals laid flowers, teddy bears and cards of condolences at the scene where the P1 pupil at St Paul's was knocked down.

The Gofundme page, set up by Lennon's cousin, says: "Unfortunately my wee cousin Lennon lost his life by getting knocked down by a van outside his school.

"At the young age of five he just started primary 1 a few weeks ago and obviously hasn't got any insurance to cover funeral costs so I'm setting up this page to help raise money for Leanne, Andrew and my Auntie Karen to give the wee man the best send off possible, fly with the Angels Lennon. Rest in Peace wee man"

Local MP Natalie McGarry said on Facebook: "My thoughts and prayers are with Lennon Toland's family today after the 5-year-old St Paul's Primary School pupil was tragically killed yesterday."

Stephanie McCulloch added: "Still can't get over this, you were such a lovey wee man with a cheeky smile! Shine Bright Lennon my handsome cousin."

Sergeant Jackie Dunbar, Greater Glasgow road policing unit, Govan, said: "From our enquiries so far, it would appear that the boy, a pupil at St Paul's Primary School on Anwoth Street, Glasgow, was struck by the van, which had come in to Dalness Street from Tollcross Road, as it turned into a car park on Dalness Street.

"It was picking-up time at the school and there were a number of people in the area at the time of the incident.

"I would ask that anyone who saw what happened, and who has not already been spoken to by police, contact officers at the Road Policing Complex via 101."
