A lifeboat launched a late-night rescue after a diver suffered decompression sickness in a loch.

The man got into difficulty in Loch Aline, near Oban, on Tuesday night as a result of the illness, which is commonly known as "the bends".

Oban lifeboat crew was sent out at around 10.10pm to search for the diver, who the found a short time later.

A specialist doctor was on board and the man was assessed and taken back to shore to a waiting ambulance and then into a decompression chamber.

A statement from the lifeboat crew on Wednesday said: "Oban lifeboat was requested to launch at 10.10pm yesterday evening to a diver suspected of suffering from decompression sickness in Loch Aline.

"The volunteer crew departed Oban with Dr Colin Wilson, who has many years of experience dealing with divers, among the crew.

"Once on scene, the casually was assessed and safely transferred to the lifeboat for the journey back to Oban.

"The lifeboat then made best speed back towards her berth, where the casualty was transferred to a waiting ambulance, and on to the decompression chamber at Dunstaffnage by 12.20am.

"Oban lifeboat then returned to station where she was refuelled and made ready for service again."
