A man has gone on trial accused of attempting to murder 11 people at a remote house in the Highlands.

Kieran Ridley is alleged to have started a fire after pouring petrol over a kitchen floor and opening the gas valves on a cooker, a court has heard.

The 32-year-old is then said to have poured petrol onto a refuse bin, causing the flames to "take effect" in the Mallaig Mhor holiday home in Mallaig, Lochaber.

The High Court in Edinburgh was told on Friday Ridley then locked the property's doors and left.

Ridley is further alleged to have locked some of the windows despite being aware there were 11 people inside, including a two-year-old child.

Prosecution lawyer Ewan Hawthorn told jurors the incident took place at the property on October 27, 2015.

The Crown junior counsel read from a statement of evidence which prosecutors and Ridley's defence team agree to be "conclusively proved".

Ridley, whose address is given in legal papers as being a prisoner of HMP Inverness, denies the attempted murder of the 11 people within the property.

His lawyers have entered a special defence saying their client was not criminally responsible for the fire by reason of mental disorder.

Mr Hawthorn told jurors that police initially detained Ridley at Cameron Avenue, Mallaig, on October 28 2015 at 1.30am. He was arrested days later in connection with the fire.

Ridley's alleged victims were named in court as being his mother Ann Ridley, his brother Duncan Ridley and a woman named Heidi Fernandez Saenz. It is alleged that a two-year-old child, an eight-year-old child, a 16-year-old child and a 15-year-old child, all of whom cannot be named for legal reasons, were also in the property at the time of the fire.

Other people who were allegedly in the house at the time are stated as being Leann Sainsbury, Mark Sainsbury, Callam Chapman and Thomas Robinson.

The trial, before judge Craig Scott QC, continues on Monday.
