A man is in a critical condition and another seriously injured after a violent attack which police are treating as attempted murder.

Emergency services were called to a property in Misk Knowes, Stevenston, North Ayrshire, at around 3.15pm on Saturday, where they found two men with severe injuries.

The victims were initially taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock before a 52-year-old man was transferred for treatment for "life-threatening" injuries.

He remains in a critical condition at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

The other victim, who is 30, has now been discharged from Crosshouse hospital.

Detective Inspector Alan McAlpine said on Sunday: "Local residents may have heard a disturbance within the property or just outside at the time of the incident.

"This was a violent attack which has resulted in a man sustaining life-threatening injuries.

"We have conducted a number of door to door interviews in the area and continue to seek information from the public to trace the person responsible.

"At this time I would urge anyone who witnessed the attack take place, or who has any information that may assist the police investigation to contact Saltcoats Police Office through 101."

He said witnesses could also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
