A man is being treated in hospital after being stabbed on a train in South Lanarkshire.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called to Hamilton West station at 5.30pm on Friday following reports of a man being attacked.

Upon arrival officers found the injured man, who had multiple stab wounds to his legs.

BTP has launched an investigation into the incident and anyone with information is urged to come forward.

A spokeswoman said: "We were called to Hamilton West railway station near Glasgow at 5.30pm on Friday October 14 following reports of a stabbing on a train.

"When officers a attended a man was discovered with stab wounds to his legs, he has been taken to hospital for treatment where his condition has been described as stable.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries into the incident are ongoing."

ScotRail said the incident had led to disruption to services between Motherwell and Dalmuir via Blantyre and those running between Larkhall and Dalmuir.

Normal service was expected to resume later on Friday evening.
