The gravestones of 85 Scots war heroes will be replaced at a Glasgow cemetery.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) will reinstall the headstones at Sighthill Cemetery, with one soldier receiving his headstone 100 years to the day he died.

Gunner James Motherwell, of the 51st Division Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery, died on October 18, 1916, aged 32.

During the 1950s, the CWGC had to take down the headstones of 105 war dead it commemorates as the cemetery had fallen into disrepair.

With the help of Glasgow City Council, the site has now been maintained to a standard whereby the men who gave their lives during both world wars can once again be marked with a CWGC headstone.

All those whose headstones had to be removed were commemorated at Eastwood Cemetery.

There are also two brothers buried at Sighthill who will receive new headstones - Alexander Wyper, 22, and his older brother John.

Iain Anderson, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's regional supervisor for Scotland, said: "We are always very pleased to be able to give our men and women who fought during both world wars the commemoration and recognition they deserve.

"Even though our boys were commemorated at another cemetery for the last 60 years when the original headstones were removed, it's very special to be able to reinstall the headstones where they lay so everyone can remember them.

"I would like to also thank all staff from the bereavement services department from Glasgow City Council who have, over the last five years, helped us to mark where the graves of our men lay in Sighthill Cemetery and have assisted us in all the work we have needed to do."

Glasgow lord provost Sadie Docherty said: "It's wonderful news that our war heroes can finally be laid to rest with the dignity they deserve.

"Glasgow City Council was extremely proud to lead the United Kingdom's First World War centenary commemorations in 2014.

"This event forms part of a rolling programme of commemoration events across the city, with partners, to mark the Great War.

"I'm sure the soldiers' families will be delighted with the work that has been done."
