A woman who saw the hit-and-run on two police officers has spoken of her horror at witnessing the attempted murder.

The 30-year-old female officer and her 31-year-old male colleague were knocked down in Glasgow late on Sunday night as they responded to an incident.

A major manhunt has now been launched for the driver and occupants, believed to be three or four men, and police are treating the incident on Banner Drive in Knightswood at 11.15pm as attempted murder.

Detective inspector Ian Hylands said police have received an "excellent" response from the public and individuals have come forward with a "number of significant pieces of information".

Police have confirmed the car used in the attack was stolen and the female officer has now been released from intensive care but remains in hospital.

Her male colleague has since been discharged.

It is understood the woman was dragged along the street under the car before her fellow officer managed to pull her free.

A 22-year-old shop worker who lives in the street and saw the incident from her window went down with her partner to help the officers.

The woman, who asked not to be named, told STV News: "I had just gone over to my window to close the blinds and it all happened. I think the two police officers were trying to grab the driver out of his car.

"The next thing he just reversed the car and hit the two of them. He got the female officer the worst. I think she was run over."

She added: "The male police officer went to help her and the next minute the driver in the car put his foot down and went down the road. He hit about three or four other cars, and the police car, and just sped off.

"When she went down I heard the whack and the crash and it was a horrible thing to hear. It's something you never want to see.

"We ran down to help them and got blankets out of our car. It was freezing and it was raining. She was conscious - the pair of them were more worried about each other than anything else.

"The two of them put on their uniforms to help people and the next minute the two of them are in hospital. It was sickening."

The officers stopped a car to speak to the men inside when the car reversed and struck both officers before speeding off.

A blue Nissan Qashqai was found abandoned and burnt out in Scotstoun.

A statement from Police Scotland on Tuesday said: "Forensic officers are carrying out a detailed examination of the blue Nissan Qashqai. Officers have now confirmed that the car was stolen.

"Detectives are also scrutinising CCTV footage for any additional information which could assist the ongoing investigation.

"The well-being and welfare of officers is paramount and Police Scotland can confirm both officers are recovering and the female officer is now out of ICU."

It added: "Officers from the Greater Glasgow Division and throughout Police Scotland wish both officers a speedy recovery.

"Members of the public are also thanked for their messages of support and good wishes for the officers, some of which have come from as far afield as the United States.
