A blaze that destroyed a number of new homes being built at a housing development is being treated as deliberate by police.

Fire crews were called to the building site in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, at around 7pm on Sunday.

Around 15 firefighters took three hours to tackle the blaze on Beith Road, Spateston, and left the scene at around 10pm.

Four under-construction homes were hit by the fire and police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "Officers are appealing for any information following a suspicious fire in Johnstone.

"Around 7.05pm on Sunday, police received a report of a fire at a building site on Beith Road, Johnstone.

"Four partially built properties were damaged in the fire which police believe was set deliberately and an investigation is under way.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact officers at Paisley Police Office via 101."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to a fire at a two-storey timber house under construction. There were no casualties.

"Crews remained at the scene until after 10pm. An investigation will be carried out into the cause of the fire."
