Prosecutors have been handed a report into the death of a man in police custody.

Steven Chesney, 33, died after being detained by police in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, in May this year.

He became ill after arriving at Motherwell police office and was taken to Wishaw General Hospital, where he died.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) launched an investigation following the death and have now submitted their full report into the circumstances to the Crown, who will consider what action to take.

A spokesman said: "PIRC has submitted its report to the Crown following an investigation into the death in custody of a 33-year-old man in Motherwell.

"The investigation focused on the circumstances leading up to the death in custody of Steven Chesney on May  1, 2016.

"The PIRC's report has now been submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service for their consideration."
