Typhoon jets were scrambled to escort a passenger plane to a Scots airport after it lost communication.

The RAF fighters were deployed during an emergency response as the Mexican aircraft flew over Scotland.

The Volaris Airlines Airbus A320 landed at Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire at around 4pm on Friday.

The passenger plane was en route from Toulouse, France, to Keflavik in Iceland when a "temporary loss of communication" with air traffic control prompted four military jets from RAF Lossiemouth to intercept.

A full emergency response was launched at the airport, with armed officers meeting the plane on the ground.

Police liaised with the seven crew on board and have since stepped down the incident. Surrounding roads have also reopened.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "An aircraft has been diverted to Glasgow Prestwick Airport, Ayrshire around 1440 hours today, Friday, October 28, 2016, following reports of a temporary loss of communication.

"A full emergency response has been put into action at the airport.

"The aircraft landed safely at 4pm. Emergency services are in attendance to establish the full circumstances."

A Glasgow Prestwick Airport spokesperson said: "We can confirm that an aircraft has been diverted to Glasgow Prestwick Airport following a temporary loss of communications.

"Some roads surrounding the airport have been closed as a precautionary measure. This is an ongoing Police Scotland incident."
