A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man who was stabbed in North Lanarkshire.

Stewart Rexter was found seriously injured on Victoria Place in Airdrie at about 5.30pm on Thursday.

He is believed to have been attacked 20 minutes earlier by a man who was caught on a nearby CCTV camera.

The 38-year-old was taken by ambulance to Monklands Hospital before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow, where he died on Saturday.

Police Scotland is treating his death as murder.

Detective chief inspector Paul Livingstone said: "Stewart was walking along Victoria Place when he was viciously attacked.

"We believe that Stewart was attacked by a man around 5.10pm on Victoria Place between Craig Street and Devonview Street.

"Enquiries are ongoing to trace the man who is described as white, between 25 and 35 years old, approximately 5ft 8in in height and of slim build, with short dark-coloured hair and wearing dark clothing.

"At this time I would urge anyone who witnessed this attack take place, or who have any information that will assist the police investigation to contact police.

"In particular, we are keen to trace the occupants of a dark Transit-type van that was parked on Victoria Place opposite the entrance to Airdrie train station.

"I believe that the occupants of the van may have vital information that would assist this inquiry and I would urge them to come forward.

"Anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem should contact Baird Street Police Office through 101.

"Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained."
