Plans for a new immigration detention centre in Scotland have been refused.

The Home Office announced proposals in September to close Dungavel Immigration Removal Centre and open a new detention facility near Glasgow Airport.

An application for a 51-bed facility in Paisley was then submitted last month along with planned drawings of the proposals.

Dungavel, near Strathaven in South Lanarkshire, is due to close towards the end of 2017 pending a successful planning application to build a new short-term holding facility at the site of the former Clansman Club on Abbotsinch Road.

Renfrewshire Council's planning committee voted unanimously against that application on Tuesday.

Councillor Terry Kelly, convener of Renfrewshire Council's planning board, said: "Members were unanimously of the view that the proposed facility would be contrary to the Adopted Renfrewshire Local Development Plan.

"There was clear concern it would be detrimental to the economic development of the Glasgow Airport Investment Area - one of the key economic drivers for the city region.

"Members agreed that there was no established identifiable functional link between the proposal and Glasgow Airport's operations.

"The proposed facility's location in a commercial and industrial area would also introduce an inappropriate use through the attendant noise, activity and disturbance."

Around 40 people gathered outside the council headquarters before the decision to protest against the plans.

The UK Government said in September that replacing Dungavel with a secure centre is part of a strategy for a "more efficient and cost-effective detention estate".

The proposal was for a short-term facility which would have had 51 beds and used to accommodate people detained during immigration enforcement operations.
