Business owners across the west of Scotland are being warned to be vigilant after several reports of attempted fraud.

Officers in the Govan area have received a number of calls from firms who have received suspicious emails.

The emails have been sent to someone with access to the company's finances and have all included a request to transfer funds.

A police spokesman said: "The correspondence itself appears to be legitimate and from a senior employee of that particular company.

"No money has so far been lost by these companies, however police are warning them to be vigilant.

"It also appears that the scam has been operating across the UK, and officers at Govan have been liaising with colleagues across the length and breadth of the country.

"Whilst a number of these incidents have been reported to police, it is believed that there are many more incidents which haven't been reported to the police."

Police said business owners should thoroughly check emails, particularly ones where they request money to be transferred.

The police statement added: "These emails might look genuine, however, please check and recheck before transferring any money."

Any business who has been targeted by a similar scam is asked to contact police via 101 to report it.
