A memorial has been planned for a schoolboy who plunged to his death from a tree.

Lachlan MacKenzie, 12, was seriously injured after falling at Fullarton Park Woods in Troon, Ayrshire, during the school holidays in October.

Emergency services were called to the woodland and battled to save the youngster but he died at the scene.

Lachlan, from Muir of Fowlis, Aberdeenshire, had been visiting his grandparents on the west coast when the accident happened.

A fundraising page was set up in his memory and has reached almost £1500 in donations. A carving dedicated to Lachlan will be made and placed in the woods with some of the cash raised.

The gofundme page says: "As a community we would love to celebrate Lachlan's life forever on our fairy trail.

"The family have also been touched by the support and a carving dedicated to Lachlan has been given their approval."

It adds: "Troon community was saddened to hear the sad news of a beautiful young boys passing after visiting Fullarton Woods.

"Our woods are a place for children like Lachlan to enjoy themselves and his passing has touched and deeply saddened the hearts of everyone in Troon .

"Lachlan loved his cat Percy, he adored football especially Real Madrid and every morning would make his mum a cup of tea before heading to school.

"Heaven has gained an angel too soon but we hope this brings joy to both our community and Lachlan's family.

"Our hearts and thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."

Tributes flooded in for the youngster following the news of his death and he was described as a "great lad who was always smiling".

A statement from the team he played with, Donside Juvenile Football Club, said: "Lachlan MacKenzie, a player with our 2004 squad sadly passed away suddenly.

"Lachlan's family have told us that Donside was Lachlan's greatest love in life where he made some amazing friends. We as a club are extremely proud that Lachlan chose to play for Donside.

"Lachlan was a great lad who was always smiling and he was a fantastic keeper for the 2004's. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him."

Alford Academy head teacher Moira Milne also paid tribute to the first year pupil.

She said: "Lachlan had settled into his first year at Alford Academy very well and this will come as a huge shock to the school and wider community.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."
