A man has been charged with raping a woman in Paisley.

Stanislaw Merdacz, 38, is alleged to have attacked the 40-year-old on Merksworth Way in the Renfrewshire town around 2.20am on Sunday.

The Polish national was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the assault.

Merdacz made no plea or declaration to the single charge against him during the short hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court.

He was detained in custody and is expected to appear in court again next week.

After the incident the woman was helped by the residents of a nearby house.

She was treated at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley but has since been discharged.
