Two more Royal Navy warships will be built on the Clyde, the UK Government is set to announce.

BAE Systems is already building three offshore patrol vessels at its shipyards in Govan and Scotstoun under a contract worth around £348m.

The new deal, which is expected to be formally announced on Thursday afternoon, will see another two ships built on the Clyde.

The vessels will be used in counter-terrorism, anti-piracy and anti-smuggling operations.

Earlier this month defence secretary Michael Fallon announced that work on eight navy frigates would begin at the same shipyards in 2017, reportedly safeguarding jobs until 2035.

An £859m deal to build 13 warships on the Clyde was signed in February 2015, but the number was scaled back to eight in November that year.

The first of the five offshore patrol vessels being built by BAE Systems is expected to enter service in 2018.
