A man has been jailed for life after stabbing a 21-year-old to death with a vegetable knife.

Murderer Nico Donnelly, 23, attacked Jamie Johnstone outside a tower block in Sandyhills, Glasgow, in January.

The 21-year-old never recovered while Donnelly fled the scene before later being arrested in England.

His death follows mother Bernadette Johnstone and cousin John Park being killed in a flat in Cranhill in 2007.

Their attacker, Gerald McLeish, was later jailed for a minimum 20 years.

The High Court in Glasgow heard Donnelly, of Cambuslang, carried out the attack outside a tower block after he and his friends had left a flat.

The murderer, who has a string of assault convictions, had been drinking and taking cocaine.

While they were waiting on a taxi, Donnelly claimed Mr Johnstone approached and threatened to hit his friend Cameron Ferguson.

The trial heard Donnelly was in possession of a vegetable knife at the time.

The killer insisted Mr Ferguson looked "terrified" so he decided to brandish the blade at Mr Johnstone.

He told the jury: "It was to scare him away - that's why I took it out my pocket. I was hoping he could see it. I thought he would run away."

Donnelly claimed Mr Johnstone tried to hit him with a bottle but the prosecution said he had simply been carrying it and was not threatening to Donnelly or Mr Ferguson.

It was alleged the knife then came into contact with Mr Johnstone as Donnelly tried to shield himself. The victim died after suffering two wounds to his chest.

Donnelly jumped on a train to England where he was later held by police.

Judge Lord Beckett told Donnelly: "As a result of your inexcusable violence, Mr Johnstone has lost his life at the age of only 21, and his family has lost him forever."

Mr Ferguson had also faced a murder charge but prosecutors dropped the allegation during the trial.
