Police are probing offensive comments made online about a young Celtic fan who suffers from Down's syndrome.

Jay Beatty, 12, who has won the hearts of Celtic players and supporters in recent years, was the target of derogatory messages on a Rangers fan forum after the Old Firm match on Hogmanay.

A number of comments mocking the youngster and making offensive comments about Down's syndrome were posted.

Police have now confirmed they received a complaint and are investigating the posts.

Jay, from County Armagh, shot to fame when former Celtic star Georgios Samaras picked him out of the crowd during Celtic's title-winning lap of honour last season after then-Celtic manager Neil Lennon gifted him his winners' medal.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We can confirm we have received a complaint regarding social media comments about Jay Beatty. Enquires are ongoing."

Last year, the youngster's father Martin Beatty told STV News that Jay has been targeted by online trolls "dozens of times".

He said the abuse was "heartbreaking," with some coming from people as far away as Australia.
