A 13-year-old girl woke up to find a man standing in her bedroom.

Police have launched a major hunt after the child woke up on Friday at her home in Dumfries and Galloway to find the male in front of her.

The incident happened at around 6.30am in Bridge of Dee, near Castle Douglas, and the man fled the scene after the young girl alerted her parents.

Officers believe the incident is linked to a number of break-ins in the area overnight on Friday and that the man intended to steal from the house.

They have appealed for anyone who may have seen the man or a white van around the time of the break-in to get in touch.

PC Chris Whiteman, from Castle Douglas Police Station, said: "Police are currently investigating a number of house-breakings in the Galloway area that have taken place overnight.

"About 6.30am on fRIDAY, January 6, a 13-year-old teenager has woken to find a male in her bedroom.

"The male is described as: late 20s, slim build, average height with black, greased back hair. He was wearing a blue shiny shirt with long sleeves and dark coloured trousers.

"The young female alerted her family and the male ran off from the house. It appears at this time that the male's intentions were to steal from the house.

"This is an unusual crime for this part of Dumfries and Galloway and we are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen this male or a small white van nearby."
