A man has admitted killing his wife at her home but his guilty plea to a reduced charge has been rejected.

Ian Gordon, 66, faced an allegation of murdering 63-year-old Patricia Ann Gordon in Troon, South Ayrshire in April last year.

Prosecutors allege he fatally attacked his wife by placing a pillow over her face and restricting her breathing.

On Tuesday, his QC Gordon Jackson entered a guilty plea to the reduced charge of culpable homicide on his behalf.

Advocate depute Iain McSporran QC told the High Court in Glasgow: "That plea is not acceptable to the Crown."

Gordon, also of Troon, will now stand trial for murder with a date set for June this year. Bail was continued meantime.
