A Canadian pilot has paid £6000 at auction for a rare bottle of whisky signed by US president-elect Donald Trump.

The 26-year-old GlenDronach was bottled in 2012 to mark the opening of Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire.

It was put on sale at McTear's auction house in Glasgow on Friday, a week before Mr Trump is due to be inaugurated in Washington DC.

Colin Plint, the successful bidder of the limited-edition whisky, was at the auction to sell his own bottle.

The 57-year-old told STV News he had no previous intention of bidding for the Trump bottle, of which only 504 were produced.

He paid more than double the expected price of £2500 to £3500.

McTear's whisky expert Laurie Black said it was sold following "intense online, phone and in-room bidding".

He added: "There was a huge amount of interest in the bottle and we were delighted with the final price, which was several times more than previous Trump bottles have sold for.

"The Glendronach is a stunning whisky in its own right, however the Trump connection gave this particular bottle a presidential boost."

Other memorabilia with Mr Trump's signature - including books, caps, dollars and presidential campaign signs - are on sale online for hundreds of pounds.

The management of Mr Trump's businesses, including golf courses in Aberdeenshire and Turnberry, is passing to his sons Eric and Donald Jr as he prepares to take office as President.
