A man was gunned down in a targeted hit outside a primary school.

Armed police attended St George's RC Primary School in Glasgow's south side after gunshots were heard outside at around 9.05am on Monday.

Ross Monaghan, 35, was shot in the back after dropping his child off at the school on Muirdyke Road, Penilee.

Monaghan was cleared at the High Court in Glasgow in May 2012 of the murder of Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll in an Asda car park in Robroyston.

He is understood to have driven away from the scene of Monday's attack and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. He suffered a shoulder injury and was later discharged.

The police helicopter was sent out as a major probe was launched into the incident. Officers say there was no risk to the children.

Later on Monday, Police Scotland revealed Mr Monaghan's attacker was pushing a four-wheel, collapsible buggy before he opened fire and made off on Hollybush Road towards Langstile Road.

A witness told STV News she heard a loud bang "like a firework" while waving goodbye to her son.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Almfauani, 33, was taking his two daughters, to school when he saw a man being shot by another man close to the school gate around 9am.

He said: "This was actually my two daughters' first day at the school, I can't believe this has happened.

"I stopped my car not far from the school gate and was about to let my daughters out when I spotted two guys walking towards the gate.

"I thought one of the guys, couldn't have been that old, was carrying a gun. I was thinking that the guys must just be playing as this was really close to the school gate.

"I wasn't sure if it was real or not but I told my kids to wait in the car just in case. But then I saw the guy shooting the other, it was so loud. I knew then that it was real."

He added: "The guy ran up the opposite end of the street from me and I thought I saw him put the gun away but I can't say for sure.

"I shouted for help for someone to try to stop the guy. I would have chased him but I did not want my kids to see this. I took my kids straight home and told them that they will be starting school tomorrow.

"I just said that I had to do more paperwork before they could start as I did not want them to be frightened.

"I came back to speak to the teachers and the police were already here, and there was a helicopter in the air. "Parents were arriving and there was a lot of screaming. It was really scary."

The attacker was described as wearing a blue padded jacket, blue jeans, a dark woollen bobble hat and a woollen scarf pulled up around his face.

Detective chief inspector John Kennedy said: "This was a particularly distressing incident for the local community, given it took place close to a primary school.

"Although our investigation is at an early stage, we are carrying out a number of enquiries to establish the exact circumstances of the incident but I do believe that this was a targeted attack focused on one intended victim.

"Whilst forensic and ballistic examinations continue to take place at the scene, detectives are carrying out door to door enquiries in the area and reviewing CCTV."

He added: "This is a highly-populated, residential area and I am appealing to anyone who may have seen the man with the buggy before or after the incident to come forward with any information.

"This was a busy time at the start of the school day and although most children were already in school, parents will still have been around its vicinity. You may have seen something unusual or somebody acting suspiciously in the area.

"Any information could help us find the person responsible for this incident and I would urge people to contact Govan Police Office on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where calls can be received anonymously."

Glasgow City Council also confirmed "all pupils and staff are safe" after the incident, which occurred outside the school grounds.

Mr Monaghan was cleared of shooting dead Mr Carroll, 29, in the Asda car park in Robroyston, Glasgow.

The incident took place just over seven years ago on January 13, 2010.

Judge Lord Brailsford acquitted Mr Monaghan after hearing two days of legal argument.

He was also cleared of attempting to defeat the ends of justice by disposing of the two guns used in the shooting and torching the getaway car.

In May 2015, William Paterson was convicted of carrying out the gangland shooting at the supermarket.
