A shotgun was found on a busy train after a forgetful passenger left the weapon on board.

Police were called after the firearm was discovered by a member of staff on the train at Dumfries on Monday morning.

The man got off at Annan but contacted ScotRail straight away after realising what he had done.

British Transport Police said the passenger was issued with a warning over the incident before the weapon was returned to him.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "The owner of the gun immediately realised his mistake, alerted train staff and the gun was secured and handed over to police at Dumfries. There was no threat to public safety."

A spokesman for ScotRail said: "We take the safety of all our passengers very seriously.

"The shotgun was immediately located and handed into police custody at Dumfries station."
