A watchdog investigating the death of a man four days after being arrested by police has launched an appeal for witnesses.

The 43-year-old man was held by officers in Glasgow on Thursday, December 22.

He took ill shortly after being taken into custody and was transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment but died on Boxing Day.

On Wednesday, the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner said it was looking to contact three people who were in the city's Saracen Street at the time the man was detained by police.

The watchdog said it is hoping to trace a woman who was standing at a bus stop outside Possilpark Church between 7pm and 7.30pm.

She is described as being in her 20s or 30s and was wearing a dark Parka-style jacket with a hood, dark trousers and grey and white trainers. The woman had dark hair which was tied in a top knot style.

The watchdog said she got on a southbound number 8A First Glasgow bus at 7.26pm.

Two men who were seen near to the bus stop are also being sought by the commissioner. They were wearing dark clothing and boarded a southbound number 75 First Glasgow bus about 7.10pm.

A spokesman for the investigation team said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who was in Saracen Street between 7pm and 7.30pm on Thursday December 22, 2016, and who may have been standing at or close to the bus stop located on the east footpath next to the Church of Scotland and who may have witnessed the incident."

The commissioner will submit its findings on the death to the Crown Office in due course.
