A paraglider was airlifted to hospital after crashing in a community park.

The 53-year-old man had been paragliding over Greenhead Moss community nature park in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, on Saturday afternoon when he plunged to the ground.

Emergency services were called to the scene off Creamery Road at around 3.30pm.

The man was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where he remains.

A local resident told STV News that the powered paraglider, which has an orange canopy, was a regular sight above Greenhead Moss on Saturdays.

He said he could see two crumpled canopies on the ground after the crash.

The onlooker said police cordoned off the area around the collision site for several hours.

A police spokeswoman said: "The man is described being in a stable condition. Inquiries are ongoing."
